Appalachianology: Kitchens & Gardens

Join us in the new outdoor kitchen venue at Evergreen for traditional Appalachian recipe demos! The new outdoor kitchen features a firebrick oven made from local Mount Savage bricks housed in a new pavilion adjacent to the historic barn. The demos will focus on native foods and farm favorites including carrot and cabbage slaw. Visit Evergreen’s beautiful gardens or the Victorian kitchen in the house museum and finish the day learning some Appalachian traditions of pickling and tin piercing.

Victory Gardens are available for pre-order online or purchase at the event. Victory Gardens were introduced during WWI when food shortages were common. We have created 3 packages that allow families to grow food even with limited space or without an established backyard garden, no experience required. All three packages contain a total of 12 plants, family-friendly recipes, and growing instructions.
