Staff

Janice Keene – President & Founder

A computer programmer turned savvy business consultant turned nonprofit leader, Janice grew up on the farm at Evergreen. The visionary behind the evolution of Evergreen Heritage Center, she was named one of Maryland’s Top 100 Women by The Daily Record. Since its founding in 2008, under her leadership, EHC has grown from serving 26 participants to over 18,000 annually.

Dawn Hein – Executive Director, Curator
Preservation Specialist Dawn Hein manages the EHC’s Experience Evergreen programs in tourism, hospitality, and outreach. Ms. Hein has over twenty years of experience in architectural design, historic preservation, and museum studies. More recently, Ms. Hein was Executive Director of the Garrett County Heritage Area. She has a B.A. degree in Interior Design from Purdue University and an M.S. degree in Historic Preservation from Ball State University.

Matt Diehl – Facilities Manager & Caretaker
A talented tradesman, fabricator and mechanical engineer, Matt is responsible for the success of our forestry program, building maintenance, and caring for the beautiful grounds. As a master craftsman, Matt has designed and built countless exhibits across the property.

Maggie Pratt – Director of Arts
Maggie is a successful working artist. She occasionally leads art programs for adults at Evergreen and she has designed and implemented the Nature of Art programs. She holds a M.Ed in Art Education/Studio from Frostburg State University.Â

Lacey Day – Education Manager
Lacey oversees Evergreen’s programs, events, and outreach. She served as an AmeriCorps member at Evergreen for two years before transitioning to staff. She has a naturalist background and enjoys teaching students of all ages about the world around us. Lacey has a B.S. in Wildlife & Fisheries from Frostburg State University and a MAEd: Natural Science and Environmental Education from Hamline University.

John Guthrie – Craftsman
John served as an AmeriCorps member for three years before transitioning to staff. He holds a bachelor's degree in Recreation and Parks Management from Frostburg State University. He assists with grounds work and maintanence, as well as at events and programs.
AmeriCorps Members

Rebecca Nigh
Rebecca is entering her second year of AmeriCorps service. She holds an associates degree in Forest Technology from Allegany College of Maryland and serves as our Agricultural Lead. She serves in our gardens and assists with educational programming, events, and workshops.

Justice Combs
Justice is starting her second term of AmeriCorps with Evergreen in Fall of 2024. She's an undergraduate at the the University of Pittsburgh where she studies environmental science and sociology. Justice serves by assisting with events, projects, programs, and summer camps.

Reillee Beeman
New to the team in 2024, Reillee is serving as an AmeriCorps member. She holds her associate's degree in Natural Resources and Wildlife Technology from Garrett College and she's pursuing her B.S. in Wildlife & Fisheries from Frostburg State University. Reillee has experience working in the state parks and with educational programming.

Cody Rowden
New to the team in 2024, Cody is an AmeriCorps member. He holds a bachelor's degree in Wildlife & Fisheries from Frostburg State University. He has experience working in the parasite's lab at FSU.

Logan Tokle
New to the team in 2024, Logan is a Wildlife & Fisheries Major at Frostburg State University. He will be graduating this spring and continuing his service this fall with Evergreen. Logan has experience working as a camp counselor, as a GIS intern, and working for the UMCES Appalachian Laboratory. He enjoys teaching, learning, and spending time outdoors!
