Evergreen is dedicated to funding programs for our area’s youth that introduce nutrition strategies as a means of reducing childhood obesity.
Working in partnership with the Western Maryland Health System, the majority of our Early Childhood Education programs encouraging life-long healthy eating habits at Mt. Savage and South Penn Elementary Schools, both Title 1 schools. Our 2015-2016 pilot program demonstrated a 15% increase in student food science/nutrition literacy, and students were found to retain that knowledge (77% retention rate). But most importantly, the Garden Discovery program increased vegetable and fruit consumption by kindergarteners by 11% and 44% respectively.
As a farm that once grew acres upon acres of crops, we continue in the tradition of growing produce and native plants. In a program with the Mt Savage 4-H Club, local children and youth grow produce at our farm and staff a local farmer’s market. The children are mentored by our agricultural staff and visit Evergreen weekly during the growing season. With the addition of our Arts/Ag Studio and Passive Solar Greenhouse, the 4-H kids are enjoying starting sprouts earlier in the season.
